The Academy held the 11th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Awards in Beijing.

"HOW CHINA PLANS TO LEAD THE COMPUTER CHIP INDUSTRY"


Prof. YUE's "research team designs optical communication chips, which use light rather than electrical signals to transfer information, and are needed in 5G mobile phones and other internet-connected devices.

He tells me about the challenges China faces in developing a world-beating computer chip industry.

To start out with equipment, its very high precision equipment. You need to print very fine features. The equipment that is needed to have this kind of technology is controlled by a few companies in the world," says Mr Yue.

He believes that Chinese technology is three to four generations behind companies like TSMC. China lacks the industry experience to manufacture high end chips, he says. But he believes that companies like Huawei are already competitive when it comes to designing chips.

Mr Yue argues that Huawei is trying to replicate the successful business models of firms like Samsung, which produces its own computer chips - rather than trying to fall into line with Beijing's industrial ambitions.

"You can almost view them as an integrated company with the expertise of what Apple or Qualcomm has," says Mr Yue.

On October 27, 2019, the International Summit on New Generation Information Technology and Integrated Circuits was grandly held at the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Industry-University-Research Base by Shenzhen Bay. The summit focused on cutting-edge chip technology and invited more than a hundred experts, including several Chinese and American academicians, to conduct in-depth discussions on the development of chip technology at this stage.

In order to promote the complementary advantages of the mainland and Hong Kong, the mainland "funds crossing the river" projects are increasing. For example, Professor Yue, the "Chip Expert" of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, has recently received scientific research funding support from Guangdong Province to develop mid-to-high-end chips that are not available in the country, and the processing speed is estimated Ten times the current 5G.

Prof Yue said that the modern information society has a strong demand for short-distance high-speed Ethernet. In order to increase the transmission speed, this project studies the use of optical signals to reduce circuit power consumption and increase speed. It is estimated that the chip will reach 56Gb/s. The team of the Faculty of Science of the University of Science and Technology has received a grant of 38 million RMB from the Guangdong Province (Guangzhou) Laboratory of Southern Ocean Science and Engineering. It will be used to establish a laboratory in the Hong Kong branch of the University of Science and Technology. It is expected to cultivate through cooperation with cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Marine Science and technology talents promote the development of the marine economy in the Greater Bay Area.
