Prof. Patrick Yue Was Interviewed by the BBC News -
"HOW CHINA PLANS TO LEAD THE COMPUTER CHIP INDUSTRY"


Prof. YUE's "research team designs optical communication chips, which use light rather than electrical signals to transfer information, and are needed in 5G mobile phones and other internet-connected devices.

He tells me about the challenges China faces in developing a world-beating computer chip industry.

To start out with equipment, its very high precision equipment. You need to print very fine features. The equipment that is needed to have this kind of technology is controlled by a few companies in the world," says Mr Yue.

He believes that Chinese technology is three to four generations behind companies like TSMC. China lacks the industry experience to manufacture high end chips, he says. But he believes that companies like Huawei are already competitive when it comes to designing chips.

Mr Yue argues that Huawei is trying to replicate the successful business models of firms like Samsung, which produces its own computer chips - rather than trying to fall into line with Beijing's industrial ambitions.

"You can almost view them as an integrated company with the expertise of what Apple or Qualcomm has," says Mr Yue."

Prof. Patrick Yue Elected as Fellow Member of The Optical Society (OSA)

Patrick Yue, a board member of Brite Semiconductor and Professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), was elected as a 2020 Fellow of The Optical Society (OSA) “for contributions to the advancement of visible light communication and optical fiber communication system-on-chip design based on silicon technologies”.

Fellow membership in OSA is limited to no more than 10% of the membership and is reserved for members who have served with distinction in the advancement of optics and photonics.

With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Yue is one of China’s foremost experts in the research and development of semiconductors and a Fellow at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The VLC technologies have been commercialized by a startup LiPHY Communications Ltd. (Hong Kong) founded by Prof. Yue and his PhD student Babar Hussain. LiPHY has demonstrated its product and services at various top international trade shows including the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Tokyo Lighting Show, and the Light+Building Frankfurt Lighting Fair, and LiPHY will also showcase its newest products in the upcoming 2020 CES in Las Vegas (booth 60500 at Tech East, LVCC, South Plaza).
